"Sodom" foi criado em 1983 pelo líder Angel Ripper (baixo e vocais, que mais tarde passou a ser conhecido como Tom Angelripper), Witch Hunter (bateria, e posteriormente assinando seu nome como Chris Witchhunter) e Aggressor (guitarra e vocais). Eles inicialmente buscavam referências e influências musicais em bandas consagradas como "Venom" e "Motorhead". Os primeiros trabalhos foram as demo tapes "Witching Metal" (83) e "Victims of Death" (84), e com o lançamento dessa última o guitarrista Aggressor deixou a banda sendo substituído por Grave Violator, e Angel Ripper assumiu os vocais sozinho.
