O Manowar surgiu em 1980, quando Joey DeMaio (baixo) se juntou a Ronnie James Dio para formar um novo projeto. Infelizmente Dio não pode dar sequência na idéia pois foi convidado a integrar o Black Sabbath. Assim, Joey resolveu continuar o projeto e para isto recrutou Eric Adams (vocal), Ross The Boss (guitarra) e Donnie Hamzik (bateria). Com esta formação registraram Battle Hymns em 1982. Este álbum é recheado de composições brilhantes, letras envolventes e melodias marcantes, somadas à voz de Eric Adams, que na época já se mostrava um dos melhores vocalistas do Heavy Metal, e às pesadas e técnicas linhas de baixo de DeMaio, que em momentos pareciam ser tocadas na guitarra.
Para o álbum seguinte, Scott Columbus substituiu Donnie Hamzik e permanece até os dias atuais, gravando todos os discos posteriores do grupo, com exceção de The Triumph Of Stell (1992), que foi gravado por Kenny Earl "Rhino" Edwards.
Apesar de não ser a primeira, esta é a formação clássica do conjunto e responsável pelos maiores sucessos da banda, com as aulas de Metal compostas por Into Glory Ride (1983), Hail To England (1984), Fighting The World (1987) e Kings Of Metal (1988). Após esse último, Ross The Boss deixou o conjunto e se dedica atualmente ao seu projeto solo, que já lançou dois discos. Para substituir Ross, foram contratados David Shankle, que gravou apenas Triumph Of Stell e Karl Logan, que permanece na banda até hoje.
